Particle size can influence dispersion, surface finish, processing behaviour, mechanical properties and the amount of mineral that can be incorporated into a formulation.
A calcium carbonate product should not be evaluated using a micron number alone. The particle-size reference and measurement method must also be stated.
What Does D50 Mean?
D50 is the median particle size. It indicates that 50% of the measured particles are smaller than the stated value and 50% are larger.
What Does D97 Mean?
D97 indicates that 97% of the measured particles are smaller than the stated size. It provides information about the upper portion of the particle-size distribution.
For example, D97 = 12 µm does not mean that every particle is exactly 12 microns. It means that approximately 97% of the measured particles fall below that size according to the stated testing method.
D50 and D97 Are Not Interchangeable
A product described as D50 = 12 µm can be significantly coarser than one described as D97 = 12 µm. Buyers should therefore request a complete particle-size distribution rather than relying on a general grade name.
Additional Specifications to Review
Particle size should be assessed alongside:
Purity
Whiteness
Moisture
Oil absorption
Top cut
Coating level
Bulk density
Test method
CarboCore provides technical specifications and relevant laboratory documentation to support accurate grade selection and shipment consistency.
